The Evangelical Church District and the Theological University of Wuppertal, under the leadership of Superintendent Ilka Federschmidt and Prof. Dr. Nicole Kuropka, invite you to a festive event from May 31 to June 1, 2024. The occasion is the 90th anniversary of the publication of the Barmen Theological Declaration.

Significant Documents of Protestantism in Germany

Ninety years ago, on May 31, 1934, the Barmen „Theological Declaration on the Present Situation of the German Evangelical Church“ was adopted by the Confessional Synod in the Gemarker Church in the Barmen district of Wuppertal. This six-thesis declaration is one of the most significant documents in the history of German Protestantism in the 20th century. Lutherans, Reformed, and United theologians jointly formulated principles of faith to oppose the theology and church politics influenced by National Socialism of the „German Christians.“

Critical Examination of Historical Significance

Since then, the Barmen Theological Declaration has been widely celebrated and received, often appropriated and instrumentalized in different contexts. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary, it is time to engage in (self-)critical reflection on the historical significance and the history of remembrance of the Barmen Declaration. The conference from May 31 to June 1, 2024, aims to contribute to this: How has the Declaration been remembered at different times? What function did each remembrance serve? From which perspectives is our remembrance shaped today? These and other questions will be illuminated by experts in specialized lectures. You can look forward to interesting presentations by Prof. Dr. Siegfried Hermle, Prof. Dr. Katharina von Kellenbach, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kampmann, and Prof. Axel Noack.

Festival Service at Gemarker Church

The conference itself takes place „on the holy mountain“ of the Theological University in Wuppertal, where accommodation and catering options are also available. In addition, on the evening of May 31, 2024, there will be a festival service at Gemarker Church in Barmen.
